Leadership and Planned Gifts Director
Development Department
Regular, Full-Time Position
SUMMARY
The Leadership and Planned Gifts Director is a senior and key member of the Development Office that is responsible for advancing and achieving the financial goals of the museum. Reporting to the Director of Development, this position will perform a leading role in the capital campaign for a new home. This position has primary responsibility for establishing and achieving contributed revenue goals by seeking major, principal and planned avenues of support for the capital campaign, as well as general operating support and endowment. For the capital campaign, this position serves on the team with the Director of Development, Board leadership, the Executive Director and Campaign Counsel to secure major funding from all private funding entities. For the annual operating campaign, this position oversees major
individual gifts and department systems. Direct staff of two, unit of seven.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- With the Director of Development, and in collaboration with the Director of Institutional Support establish, monitor and achieve contributed income goals for the capital campaign
- Lead and oversee major individual gifts for annual operating
- Lead the planned giving effort
- Participate as a senior member of the Capital Campaign team
- Advance fundraising objectives, working closely with the Campaign Cabinet, Campaign Committee, Campaign Counsel, and other campaign fundraising bodies
- Develop leadership and major gift prospect cultivation and solicitation strategies
- Craft capital and endowment requests
- Participate in solicitation briefings
- Attend solicitation meetings as appropriate
- Oversee cultivation activities and events
- Oversee production of campaign materials
- Oversee a planning and execution process along with a Committee of Directors, donors, and staff for groundbreaking, opening, and one-year anniversary events
- Directly supervise and collaborate with Capital Campaign Development Officer and Campaign Associate
- Monitor campaign financial reports, including cash-flow projections and income budgets
- Oversee campaign expense budgets
- Develop strategies for, meet with, and solicit major gifts for operating support
- Participate in the development of short- and long-term fundraising plans and projections, and provide progress/status reports
- Work closely with other Board volunteers and senior staff to solicit major gifts from individuals and corporate sponsors
- Work closely with program staff to identify funding opportunities/priorities
- Write and edit proposals and reports targeted to specific funders
- Oversee creation and maintenance of relevant fundraising materials
- Oversee cultivation and stewardship opportunities
- Advance a Planned Giving program
- Recruit advisors for professional assistance
- market the Oppenheimer Fellows program
- identify, cultivating and soliciting a prospect pool
- respond to inquiries, stewarding donors
- ensure proper administration of gifts
- Seek out and maintain personal knowledge of a broad range of programs throughout the museum
- Participate in long-range budget and program planning for the museum
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS degree or equivalent, Master’s degree preferred, 3 years of proposal writing experience, and 5 years experience with successful track record in major gifts, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Strong experience in working with Boards, volunteers, and donors
- Experience in planned giving
- Excellent writing and communications skills
- Knowledge of science preferred, and knowledge of arts and education helpful
- Ability to work effectively with large and diverse program staff
- Knowledge of PC required, with proficiency in Word and Excel desired
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines
- Ability to work independently, prioritize, and organize multiple projects
- Experience in managing staff
