PAST EVENT

Cosmological Constructs

Visitors journeyed through our solar system and beyond via installations by Dan Goods, an artist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, while Megan Prelinger, cofounder of the Prelinger Library, gave a lighthearted presentation of American culture and dreams during our initial forays into space. Media artist David Cerf presented an audiovisual journey through the unusual cargo loaded onto NASA’s Voyager missions, playing sounds from the Golden Record, a 12-inch, gold-plated copper disk carried aboard both Voyager spacecraft. The records contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on earth. Afterward, the record’s producer, author and filmmaker Timothy Ferris, discussed communication with our yet-to-be-discovered neighbors in space. Visitors also had the opportunity to stargaze with the San Francisco Amateur Astronomers, and to watch Meltdown, a short play by Pat Milton that was performed by Exploratorium staff.
