Hardly Strictly Science

Keeping time with the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, held annually in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Hardly Strictly Science featured explorations of listening, music, and the physics of sound. Visitors were invited to sit in on a conversation between Senior Scientist Thomas Humphrey and celebrated musician Kieran Kane, and get a feel for making and repairing stringed instruments with luthier Frank Ford. They caught a Tokyo–San Francisco country music odyssey by viewing the documentary Waiting for a Train: The Toshio Hirano Story. They also took a special tour of our Listen exhibition and Sound Column, an artwork built into the dome of the Palace of Fine Arts.
