Navigating Polynesian Art and Science

To celebrate Never Lost, our website about the ancient art and science of Polynesian navigation, we presented expert ocean navigator Kalepa Baybayan, who shared some of the astounding noninstrument techniques that have enabled Pacific Islanders to cross the Pacific for thousands of years. Also featured was award-winning slack-key guitarist Makana, who has toured the world numerous times and made regular appearances on the mainland United States, including a White House performance for the Obamas. Rounding out the program were live demonstrations—making kapa cloth and leis—and special films throughout the evening.
