Alternative Energy Explorations

This event presented a collection of objects, organizations, and activities that explore or use various alternative energy sources—from the serious to the whimsical.

Highlights

  • Solar SunFlowers: These 22-foot-high kinetic sculptures that interacted with visitors were created by Cynthia Washburn and Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics.
  • Hog Island Oyster Farm: Visitors discovered how oysters are sustainably and locally grown in Tomales Bay while sampling one of Hog Island’s famous mollusks.
  • Kijiji Grows Aquaponics: Visitors learned how to set up a sustainable garden of fish and plants with aquaponics expert and engineer Eric Maundu.
  • Bamboo Bike Studio: Visitors found out what tools and materials are needed to build the frame of a bike out of bamboo.
  • Electric Vehicles: Visitors explored do-it-yourself converted Miatas, an electrically powered motorcycle, and more.
  • From Sunshine/Waves/Wind to Electricity: Exploratorium science educators Modesto Tamez and Eric Muller gave hands-on presentations about alternative energy sources.
  • Energy from Hydrogen: Science educator Eric Muller gave a lively demonstration.
  • Wind Energy! with Larry Shankle: Visitors learned how to generate energy at home using wind turbines.
  • Cinema Arts Films: Brilliant Noise (2008, 6 min.) by Semiconductor took viewers into the data vaults of solar astronomy to reveal the sun’s finest unseen moments. The potential of solar power was revealed in Charles and Ray Eames’s Solar Do-Nothing Machine (1957, 2 min.).
