TOOLS THROUGH TIME

satellite image of sunThis picture of the sun was taken using the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope aboard NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft. The bright spots you see on the sun are active regions, likely sites for solar flares. In visible light images of the sun, active regions appear as dark spots, called sunspots.

Native American dancerThis dancer, one of the Tewa Dancers from the North, is wearing a Zuni sun symbol on his back. The symbol is worn as a sign of respect for the sun. Look closely and you can see it is a face, incorporating symbols of the earth (in red and yellow), the sky (light blue), and rain (black bars at the bottom of the face).
