Karen WorthOutstanding Educator Award
Karen Worth is Senior Scientist at Education Development Center Inc. in Newton, Massachusetts, where she directs projects in early childhood and K-through-12 science education. Her early work at EDC included the development of the African Primary Science Program in the 60's and Insights, an elementary inquiry-based curriculum used in schools nationwide and abroad. Ms. Worth chaired the working group on science teaching standards for the National Academy of Science's National Science Education Standards effort. She also worked with a number of higher education, science, and cultural institutions to develop and implement collaborative programs in support of science education in the schools, and has served on advisory boards for a number of national science reform projects. She has consulted with a number of urban districts nationwide including those in Buffalo, NY; Pasadena, CA; Las Vegas, NV; Cambridge, MA, and Tucson, AZ. Ms. Worth also consults with public television channels including WGBH in Boston, WNET in Buffalo, and WNED in New York City, in the development of science programs for teachers and children. Ms. Worth is a faculty member at Wheelock College, where she teaches early childhood and elementary education. For many years, Ms. Worth directed Wheelock's Boston Public School Collaborative Programs, which provided staff and curriculum development for Boston elementary schools, technical assistance to the central administration for systemwide planning, and leadership in the pairing between 25 colleges and universities and the Boston Public Schools. Ms. Worth began her education career as a classroom teacher in New York City. |
