The first annual BAI was held at
the UC Santa Cruz campus from August
16 through August 19, 2003. Sixty
CILS faculty, students, and practitioners
met to share research questions
on August 15, and were joined at
a reception that evening by CILS
advisors and guests representing
related research, policy, and practitioner
communities. The goal of this first
BAI was to establish a shared sense
of the variety of disciplinary,
theoretical, and practitioner perspectives
of CILS, to explore the possibilities
for shared research or practice,
and to develop a common identity
and sense of "Center-ness"
for CILS.
The BAI featured keynote speakers
Judith Ramaley, Assistant Director,
National Science Foundation, Education
and Human Resources Directorate
and Bruce Alberts, President National
Academy of Sciences. Both spoke
about the need to better understand
how people learn science in and
out of school to develop not only
scientific knowledge and leadership,
but also scientific literacy in
schools and in the public.
