Gewirtz's research is in the sociology of education
and education policy. She is interested in issues of
equality and social justice; public sector restructuring;
educational reform; power and politics in the policy
process; and values in social research. Recent European
research council-funded projects include a study of
market forces and parental choice in education, and
a project on the changing culture and values of schooling
in the context of managerial reform. She is currently
writing a book with Alan Cribb which seeks to promote
a more ethically reflexive sociology of education. As
a member of the Centre for Public Policy Research at
King's, Sharon will work closely with CILS post docs
in examining issues of social justice, diversity and
equity in relation to informal science learning.
