ExNET > Exhibits > Group 9 > Circular scales

What you expect from music may depend partly or completly on the musical structures that are familiar to you. Often, this tension is created by using a scale that contains a leading tone. The leading tone seems unresolved unless it is followed by a note called the tonic or home tone. This exhibit is made up of one circular whole tone scale and one circular major scale. In the whole tone scale, all adjacent notes are equally spaced a whole-step interval apart. Since all of the notes are equally spaced, there is no leading tone to be resolved. In the major scale, which does have a leading tone , some adjacent notes are a half-step interval apart, and other adjacent notes are a whole step interval apart. The relationship between the half-step intervals and the whole step intervals produces the leading tone in the major scales. By using the mallets attached to the cords to play the scales, one notices that the scales sound different to each individual.
