Cabaret
Mechanical Theatre
25 Funny, Whimiscal Mechanical
Automata , Formerly of Covent
Garden, London
There aren’t many exhibitions
where you can see a man eating
spaghetti in the bath, a creature
brushing its teeth, or meet
the last Dodo. A wild and whimsical
collection of mechanical automata
- large and small sculpture
that are moved by turning a
crank or pushing a button -
are available for your museum,
direct from London. Called
Cabaret Mechanical Theatre,
the exhibition includes 25
funny, surreal, subversive
moving automata, many that
were formerly on view at Covent
Garden, and remained there
for fifteen years. Underlying
Cabaret Mechanical Theatre
are the gears and cams that
turn in full view, exposing
mechanisms that translate into
the funny, wondrous and colorful
actions of the automata.
