Exploratorium Summer Camps 2014

Exploratorium Summer Camps 2014

Join us at our fabulous summer camps for kids ages 7 to 14. Each of our programs offers playful and creative opportunities for children to explore the world around them using a mix of science activities, art projects, group games, our vast exhibit collection, and more. Our programs balance curiosity-driven free time with content-based activities that incorporate both structured and open-ended, self-directed learning. And, of course, we make it fun!

If you’re signing up for one of our camps, please note that your spot will be reserved and confirmed when you pay. However, your registration will not be complete until we receive completed and signed medical and emergency contact forms from you. You will receive an e-mail within ten business days with complete instructions and more information about the program you chose. If you don’t receive this, please check your spam filter or contact us at lifelong.learning@exploratorium.edu or (415) 528-4420.

Girls Science Institute

The Girls Science Institute (GSI) promotes science literacy, fosters self-confidence in scientific abilities, and highlights female role models in scientific disciplines for girls ages 10–12. The Institute’s multiday workshops explore various scientific disciplines through hands-on activities, highlight the work of women who made significant historical contributions in their fields, and encourage girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

This year, we’re excited to offer GSI: Introduction to Engineering and GSI: Intermediate Engineering. In the introductory workshop, we’ll explore the four engineering disciplines—chemical, mechanical, structural, and electrical—through hands-on activities, guided exhibit exploration, group engineering challenges, and by meeting female role models. The intermediate workshop will focus on electrical engineering, and will cover electricity and magnetism, circuits, and tool usage also through hands-on activities, exhibit explorations, group challenges, and by meeting female engineer role models.

Girls Science Institute: Introduction to Engineering

This weeklong workshop offers girls, ages 10–12, an opportunity to explore the four disciplines of engineering: chemical, mechanical, structural, and electrical. During the week, the girls will meet women experts from each field and will participate in hands-on activities and guided exhibit explorations within each discipline. The week culminates in a group engineering challenge.

Workshops are on Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Girls Science Institute: Intermediate Engineering—Electrical Engineering

This weeklong workshop for girls ages 10–12 explores electrical engineering. Women experts in the field will be on hand daily to share their stories and support the girls during their explorations. The girls will gain a historical understanding of electrical engineering; explore the foundation of electrical and magnetism; build circuits; learn about components; make electricity and store it; find the connection between motors, generators, and turbines; and learn how to calculate the cost of power. The week culminates in a group engineering challenge.

Workshops are on Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
