Stay Informed/Get Involved
Thank you for your interest in the Exploratorium’s move to the Embarcadero. As you may know, from 2006 to 2009 we hosted community meetings where we discussed our plans in detail. If you have not done so already, please send an e-mail to explo-embarcadero@exploratorium.edu
with “subscribe” in the subject line so that we can e-mail you an invitation when we host another community meeting.
The Board of Supervisors made a formal finding of fiscal feasibility for the Exploratorium and the project in July 2006. We have conducted due diligence on Pier 15, including intensive structural, geotechnical, historical, architectural, and environmental testing. We have also done similar testing on Pier 17 to assess its condition for future use. In December 2008, the Board of Supervisors again voted that the project was fiscally feasible, this time including the expansion into Pier 17 in its assessment. Our most recent milestone is that the San Francisco Planning Commission voted unanimously to certify the project’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR) based on the Exploratorium’s agreement to accept mitigation measures that reduce identified environmental impacts to less-than-significant levels. The certification clears the way for the Exploratorium to focus on the remaining regulatory approvals.
