When it comes to chimpanzees in the wild, there's some anecdotes and some observations

of potentially altruistic behaviors.

An accident occurs and a chimp comes to help.

Or behaviors like grooming each other are also often regarded as potentially altruistic behaviors.

So we take these examples and try to structure certain behaviors in our experimental studies.

You have to have both the experimental approach and these observations.

The advantage of observation in the wild is that you have them in their natural environment.

But the problem with that a little bit is that these situations are not well controlled.

The advantage of experimental studies is that we can control the situation well.

We know who is in the room, and there's no other person who could potentially reward

the helping behavior of that individual.

But the problem with experimental studies is if you find something that occurs

only in the experiment but never is observed in the wild, that's a bit strange.

So, optimally, you want to have something that you can observe in the wild

and then investigate in more detail in the lab.
