The
Braceable Bridge demonstrates the stiffening
provided by adding vertical members to a beam, or bridge.
A raised plank with two hinged sides spans a short distance
of floor. When the sides of the "bridge" are
down (parallel to the floor) the layer of wood supporting
the visitor's weight is relatively thin, and therefore,
very flexible. When the sides are raised, thereby bracing
the plank, the bridge becomes very rigid.
