The
temperature sensitive nerve endings in your skin must
detect the difference between your body temperature
and your skin temperature. When your skin cools down,
the temperature sensitive nerves tell you that the object
that you are touching is cold. The metal, the wood and
the styrofoam at this exhibit are all the same temperature
and are colder than your hand. But, because they do
not carry the heat away from your hand at the same rate,
they do not feel equally cold.
