Light of two different intensities can be compared using a measuring stick and a card with a grease spot in its center. The card can be placed at any point between the two sources. When the light falling on each side of the paper is equal, the translucent grease spot will disappear. By comparing the distances from the card to each light source, the relative intensities of each can be determined.
