Hot and Cold Chimneys is a tactile illusion exhibit. Three copper pipes extend vertically from a cabinet: one is cold, the middle one luke warm, and the third hot. Visitors can play with how touching one pipe affects their perception of the other pipes. Touching the middle pipe after holding onto the cold pipe makes luke warm pipe seem too hot to touch. Conversely, touching the middle pipe after holding the hot pipe makes luke warm seem too cold to touch. Holding different pipes with each hand and switching pipes creates interesting experiences.
