CMP > Exhibits > On-line Catalog > M > Map Projector

A light source inside a clear acrylic globe casts shadows of the earth's land masses on whatever surfaces are held up to it. If the surface is a plane, the shadow is a planer projection; a cylinder produces a cylindrical projection. This demonstrates the principles by which flat maps are derived from the surface of a sphere.
