Red
blood cells from an individual with sickle cell disease
are induced to change shape from normal, round donut
shape, to sickle like, starburst shape. Visitors view
the process under a video microscope. Pressing a button
bathes the round red blood cells in a solution low in
oxygen, causing the hemoglobin in the blood cells to
give up their oxygen. When sickling hemoglobin loses
oxygen, it clumps together, forcing the cells to sickle.
Pressing another button introduces an oxygen rich solution,
and the sickled cells regain their normal shape.
