Standing Wave

Standing Wave uses a long garage door spring to demonstrate a standing wave. The spring is attached to a vibrating motor which can be adjusted to different speeds. At particular speeds, visitors will notice patterns of movement and stillness in the spring which indicate standing waves. These wave patterns can also be felt by running a hand along the top of the spring. The exhibit provides a direct analogy to resonance in a sound column.
