EXHIBIT SUPPORT TECHNICIAN I (for Life Sciences)
Living Systems Group: Life Sciences Area
On-call Position




SUMMARY:

This is on-call position in the Life Sciences area of the Exploratorium providing support for the daily set-up of public exhibits and demonstrations, as well as behind-the-scenes activities, such as making solutions and cultures.  The position also undertakes routine maintenance of living organisms, public exhibits, and laboratory equipment.  The ideal applicant must be available to work weekdays and weekends, and also on short notice when needed.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Daily set-up of Life Sciences exhibits
  • Daily preparation of solutions and cultures required to support exhibit set-up
  • Daily live microscope demonstrations for the public
  • Routine maintenance of exhibits and equipment
  • Routine care of marine invertebrates, plants, freshwater fish, terrariums, and insect colonies
  • Additional duties, as assigned by supervisor



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA degree in the biological sciences or significant credits towards a degree
  • Demonstrated interest in biology
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in working with live organisms
  • Basic laboratory skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Knowledge of and skill in microscopy and dissections useful
  • Ability to work weekend hours
