BUIDLING OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN II
Operations Department
On-Call Position




SUMMARY:

The Operations Department is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and repairs to the Exploratorium’s facilities and maintains security and life safety systems. The department also provides support for day and evening special events and public programs. This intermediate level position reports to the Operations Manager and will be required to work without supervision during special evening assignments. The on-call Operations Technician II must also be a fully integrated part of the department and may be call upon to work during the day for additional coverage and carry out individual and departmental projects.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Support safety and security functions, including First Aid and CPR coverage and the operation and response to fire and other life safety systems during special events.
    • Provide logistical support for museum events and programs, including providing access to electrical distribution boxes and outlets; opening and closing the facility, and restoring museum to original condition for public opening; performing final lockup after events.
    • Work directly with the Event Coordinators and take directions.
    • Interface with outside vendors on behalf of Operations Department.
    • Gather information regarding ongoing needs and operation of the physical plant, and communicate this information to the Facilities and Operations Manager.
    • Document, maintain, repair, and upgrade electrical system in office workspaces.
    • Maintain and develop facilities, including:
    • Maintain inventory, order and secure necessary supplies
    • Construction tasks such as framing, dry walling and finish carpentry
    • Painting of interior and exterior walls and offices
    • Lighting tasks such as re-lamping, ballast changes and installation of new fixtures
    • Plumbing tasks including replacement and repair of faucets, line drainage, addition of new lines and plumbing fixtures
    • Maintain, change and repair motors, belts and filters on HVAC systems
    • Perform ergonomic workstation assessments and modify them as needed
    • Repair, maintain, and secure furniture against seismic activity
    • Operate LPG Forklift and 35’ Platform lift.
    • Other related duties as assigned.



    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Minimum 3 years of related experience or minimum 2 years experience as an Ops Tech 1 and can demonstrate the required skills.
    • Knowledge of Exploratorium’s building systems and organizational structure preferred.
    • Ability to show up to work on time, follow instructions and complete assignments in a timely fashion.
    • Able to work diplomatically with the Exploratorium’s diverse staff and personalities.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English.
    • Basic computer literacy: email, web browsers and MS Word.
    • Ability to work under pressure, and be able to balance and prioritize tasks without distractions.
    • Must be able and willing to work conscientiously with minimal supervision and show initiative.
    • Intermediate skills working on one or more of the following: framing, carpentry, dry walling, painting, electrical systems, HVAC, and/or plumbing. 
    • Demonstrated knowledge and competent use of wood shop and metal shop machinery such as table saw, band saw, drill press, belt sander etc.
    • Demonstrated ability to work safely and conscientiously with hand and power tools, various machines, and live electrical installations (120/208/277 volts AC).
    • Ability to climb high ladders, move swiftly throughout museum, crawl into tight spaces, lift 75 lb. and use machinery, applying museum safety standards.
    • Valid California Driver's License and good driving record.
    • Ability to meet and abide by Cal. OSHA’s requirements for Respirator Protection, Forklift and Platform Lift Programs.
    • Certification in AHA or Red Cross CPR and First Aid or ability to become certified.
    • Acceptance and ability to work required weekends, evenings, and night on-call assignments.
