PROJECT DIRECTOR
Exhibit Environment Group: Geometry Playground project
Fixed-term, Full-time Position (Part-time schedule available)
SUMMARY:
The Geometry Playground Project Director is responsible for successful completion of a multi-year, National Science Foundation-funded project to create a traveling exhibition about geometry and to conduct research on the effects of exhibit immersion on visitor learning. The exhibition environment will encompass both whole-body immersive play structures and hands-on interactive exhibits. The ideal candidate will have experience directing team projects as well as a background in at least one of the following four areas: (a) mathematics/geometry (b) math education, (c) learning research in mathematics, (d) development of traveling exhibitions for museums. The Project Director works closely with the Principal Investigator to provide the Geometry Playground team with managerial, conceptual, and scientific leadership. These leadership functions include directing the project team, coordinating project activities, researching and shaping content, overseeing research on informal math learning, developing and disseminating project goals, guiding project priorities, optimizing the collective effectiveness of the project activity, and maximizing the project’s overall contribution to the Exhibit Environment (EE) group and the Exploratorium. The Project Director is also a participant in the development of new projects and proposals that meet the institutional directions and priorities of EE.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS:
- Work closely with Principal Investigator to identify and monitor goals, directions and implementation strategies for project
- Provide conceptual and organizational leadership to project team to ensure project and institutional goals are met
- Direct visitor learning research and evaluation studies for the project
- Direct project activity through exhibit development, content research, visitor learning research and writing, editing, or other activities as appropriate
- Work closely with assigned Project Manager to define and monitor project timelines, schedules, and budgets, and to coordinate staff and resource needs
- Provide institutional communication of project activity and progress
- Act as representative of Exploratorium to outside agencies, including funding sources, content experts, and the museum community in relation to project needs
- Direct work of Development Department to ensure project reporting requirements and other accountability needs are met
- Sign timesheets and evaluate the staff assigned to the project
- Collaborate with EE staff in the development of new project ideas
- Develop and write new grant proposals as appropriate
- Additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters degree in math, science, or math education field. Ph.D’s encouraged to apply.
- Minimum of 5 years project management or project direction in a museum, informal education or research setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated strong research and writing skills
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to organize and motivate teams to work collaboratively with colleagues, researchers, and outside specialists
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work with multiple agendas and goals
- Experience conducting research on learning a strong plus
- Knowledge of inquiry-based teaching approaches helpful
