Cochlear implant wearers like Michael Chorost hear the world through electronic ears.

Michael Chorost was born with severe hearing loss due to rubella and went completely deaf at 37. He received a cochlear implant that same year, and wrote a memoir entitled Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human (Houghton Mifflin, 2005). (A paperback version in 2006 has a slightly different titleŚRebuilt: My Journey Back to the Hearing World.) In August 2006, Rebuilt won the PEN USA Book Award for Creative Nonfiction.
