Preserving our Wild Fish (Clip)
Date: May 14, 2014
Running Time: 00:06:00

Our native steelhead and salmon are part of a magnificent natural heritage in the central coast of California. Unfortunately, urbanization and drought have significantly impacted the health of our watersheds and native fish have paid the price. Coho salmon in the Central California Coast have declined more than 95 percent from historic population levels, and are listed species as an endangered species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Just a half hour from the SF Bay Area’s urban centers, the Lagunitas Creek watershed is one of the most important waterways left for wild coho salmon, supporting 10 to 20 percent of all Central Coast coho salmon surviving today. In this episode, you'll get a get a glimpse into frontline efforts to restore healthy, self-sustaining populations of California’s native steelhead and salmon across their historic range.
Urban environments like San Francisco are full of mysterious natural and human-made phenomena. Why are there so many one-footed pigeons? Where does the sewage go? Why is our “summer” in May and September? The Exploratorium is “taking it outside" to explore these and other questions in engineering, ecology, optics, waves, geology, architecture, weather, and more. Look for new episodes once a month.
