After Dark
Dr. Megavolt under the Palace of Fine Arts Rotunda (Clip)
Date: November 18, 2009
Running Time: 00:02:54

In November 2009, Exploratorium After Dark welcomed particle physicist Dr. Austin Richards -- aka Dr. MegaVolt -- for an unforgettable performance. Under the Palace of Fine Arts rotunda, he jousted with a high-voltage Tesla coil, which generated 200,000 volts of electricity and shot 14-foot-long arcs of lightning through the air. Engaging with the Tesla coil he built, electric arcs struck Dr. MegaVolt as well as props such as florescent lights, wooden sticks, CDs, and a bicycle. Only his metal suit protected him from electrocution.
This collection of individual programs tells a wide range of stories, reflecting the diverse interests of the Exploratorium community.
