A community-built Nanoworld!

New discoveries in nanotechnology are revolutionizing our approach to saving energy, developing medical technologies, and engineering super-strong materials. In the summer of 2006, the Exploratorium went extra small to provide an immersive experience of a very different world.

During three weekends in July and August, 2006, we invited the public to join staff in a scientific “barn-raising,” where we used more than a hundred thousand parts to create a walk-through simulation of the nanoworld.

With your help, this unique landscape took shape throughout the summer. Monster nanotubes and other structures now fill the Exploratorium’s 60-foot-high central space into the fall of 2006. The resulting assemblage of thousands of “atoms” is one of the largest model environments of the nanoscale universe you’ll ever see!

Did you know?
On July 8, 9, 22, 23 and August 12 & 13, 2006, hundreds of visitors and volunteers joined staff to create Nanoscape. Thanks to the Nanoscape Assemblers, beautiful structures emerged as you can see in our photo collection!
