Palynology

The field dealing with the study of pollen (called palynology) is relatively new, and many questions remain unanswered. For example, pollen is everywhere, transporting DNA within a tough capsule that’s stronger than Teflon—yet scientists still don’t know exactly what it’s made of. Meanwhile, they also can’t explain the elaborate (and often beautiful) shapes that pollen takes: Do these shapes help the pollen fly, help it “dock” on the right flower, or do something else altogether?
