OUTDOOR EXPLORATORIUM: Experiments in Noticing

Exhibit Prototypes

The Exploratorium is creating an outdoor environment different from the those at other science museums. Rather than selecting exhibits based on the big ideas in physics, or the size, scale and functional features of exhibits, we will select exhibits from a research and development process that focuses on:

  • visitor interactions with phenomena present and apparent in a variety of different environments;
  • developers' experiments with these phenomena;
  • specific constraints of different locations.
For these reasons, we are conceiving of the Outdoor Exploratorium initially as a place for a variety of exhibit experiments and mockups, based on our research with visitors. Ultimately, we will select the exhibit mockups that have been most successful with visitors and fully develop them into working prototypes.
