Abandoned Paths
Of the many exhibit ideas the APE Team chased during the project, 30 exhibits proved to foster the kind of visitor-directed behavior we were after. From encouraging visitors to observe ice crystals to offering opportunities to test hypotheses about rotational inertia, APE exhibits reveal a continuum of behavior that includes both hands-on and minds-on engagement and ranges from free-form exploration to analytical inquiry.

Believing that we learn as much from our failures as our successes, included here are exhibits developed during the APE project that, in the end, did not prove to be especially APEy. Although they are strong exhibit experiences in their own right, they did not demonstrate the open-ended qualities needed to foster active prolonged engagement.
