Animation is on view from December 26 - 28, and December 30, at 1pm and 3pm, in the Exploratorium’s McBean Theater. The program is as follows and is included in the price of admission to the Exploratorium:
Saturday, December 20 McBean Theater, 2pm Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales (1963, 26 minutes, black and white, 16mm film) presents a story, written and narrated by Dylan Thomas, that portrays a boy’s memories of Christmas in Wales. Utilizing still photographs of the Welsh countryside during the winter season, this film evokes memories of childhood and snow. The Sweater (1980, 10 min.), directed by Sheldon Cohen, is an animated version of a short story by Québec author Roch Carrier, set in the rural Québec of his boyhood. Carrier recalls the passion for playing hockey, which he shared with the other boys of his community. It was the time of Rocket Richard, the Canadiens' greatest star. This funny, poignant story is animated in a style that evokes the period of the late 1940s. Holiday Animation Festival A special holiday screening with some fun short films that defy gravity and provide imaginative ways of seeing the world. Among the films featured are Whizeewhig (2002, 5 min.), by local media artist Chih Cheng Peng, which sets urban architecture in motion; Fetch (2001, 5min.), by Bay Area animator Nina Paley, a funny and kinetic exploration of space, involving an animated dog chasing a ball, with music composed and played by Nik Phelps and the Sprocket Ensemble; and Tin Toy (1988, 5 min.), by John Lasseter and Pixar Animation Studios, an Academy-Award-winning animated film that was the first to render life-like baby movements digitally. |
