Toychestra Performs at the Exploratorium As the name implies, Toychestra plays toys. The six Oakland-based women in the ensemble use actual instruments, like toddler-sized pianos, xylophones and drums, and a wide range of toys, such as a pink Zoo Train, that just make great sound. They also use a washboard, pots and pans, and a jack-in-the-box for percussion. Toychestra’s sweet, well-orchestrated cacophonies can be heard on Saturday, December 6. From 1-2:30pm, they will lead a participatory workshop for families, and then, at 3pm, Toychestra performs in the Exploratorium's McBean Theater. Toychestra is presented in conjunction with Toying Around, a series of toy-related, special holiday events at the Exploratorium during the month of December. For workshop registration and performance reservations, please call (415) 674-2870. Both events are free with admission to the Exploratorium.
Toychestra has released two CDs, toured Europe three times, and played in venues as diverse as Bottom of the Hill and local middle schools. They perform at the Musique et Jouets Festival in Paris in February 2004. |
