Exploratorium Film Program
On Sunday, February 24,
the Exploratorium Film Program presents Step Show: Portrait
of a Black Fraternity, From Punishment to Pardon: The
Port Chicago Mutiny and Bruce as part of its
Portraits of People and Places presentation in the Exploratoriums
McBean Theater at 2:00pm. This screening is included in the price
of admission to the Exploratorium.
The program is as follows:
From Punishment to Pardon: The Port Chicago Mutiny (2000,
10 min.) by 16 year-old Preston Burger is an accomplished film essay
that depicts a little known chapter in African American history. Winner
of the San Francisco International Film Festivals Golden Gate
Award in the youth category, this short film uses archival footage
and a riveting narration to offer the viewer a succinct and sensitive
portrayal of an incident that occurred in Northern California during
WWII.
Step Show: Portrait of a Black Fraternity (2001, 24 min.)
by Marci Aroy and Beverly Oden showcases the dynamic, award winning
Kappas, the only African American fraternity at U.C. Berkeley, and
their step dancing competitions. This film also explores the competion
for visibility on a campus where fewer than 5% of students are African
American.
Bruce (2000, 3 min.) by Ruth Sergel is a visual celebration
that results in a collaboration between the camera and the dancer.
