Julia Robinson and the Solution to Hilbert's 10th Problem
A Mathematics Biography Film
with filmmaker George Csicsery and biographer Constance Reid in person
Saturday, April 27, 2 pm
McBean Theater

The Exploratorium is pleased to present a work-in-progress screening of a film about Julia Robinson, (1919-1985), the first woman mathematician elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the first woman to serve as president of the American Mathematical Society. The biographical documentary concentrates on Robinson's 20 year efforts to solve David Hilbert's famous 10th problem, and on the friendship and collaboration she developed with Yuri Matiyasevich, a young Russian who put the finishing touches on solving the problem in 1970. One of those telling Robinson’s story on screen is her sister and biographer, Constance Reid, who is also the author of a biography of David Hilbert. Constance Reid and filmmaker George Csicsery (N is a Number: A Portrait of Paul Erdös) will be present to talk about Julia Robinson and the process of putting her life on film.

This event is offered in conjunction with Mathematica: The World of Numbers And… Beyond, a major post-Sputnik era exhibition created by renowned designers Charles and Ray Eames, on view at the Exploratorium through May 5, 2002. This event is free with museum admission.
