Moebius Band
by German artist Valeska Peschke
Come walk on an "impossible" surface
Sunday April 7 through May 5, 2002
In conjunction with Mathematica: A World of Numbers
and Beyond
Preview and artists talk, April 3 at 7pm
The Moebius Band
sculpture, by artist Valeska Peschke of Germany, is a 20 ft. long interactive
experience where visitors are invited to walk on an "impossible"
surface. A Moebius Band is a seemingly two-sided ribbon-like form that
visitors will discover really has only one surface! An interactive,
inflatable sculptural form, imagine a large, twisted loop that is designed
to move with visitors as they attempt to walk along it endlessly. The
interactive Moebius Band sculpture will be open to the
public from Sunday April 7 through Sunday, May 5, 2002, and is included
in the price of admission to the Exploratorium. It is offered in conjunction
with Mathematica: A World of Numbers
and Beyond. A preview
and artists talk will take place on Wednesday, April 3 at 7pm.
The Moebius Band relates to the mathematical concept of Topology --
Topology is a fascinating and frequently counter-intuitive field of
mathematical investigation that often undermines our "number
based" image of what mathematics is. One example, as made tangible
by the Moebius Band sculpture, is a "non-orientable" surface
where "up and down," or "top and bottom" have
no meaning. This inflated sculpture, constructed like a raft, is a
bit like a forward-moving treadmill. With images printed on the band,
it also functions like a walk-through film loop. Visitors move through
an endless visual topography, a series of symbols referring to daily
city life. The symbols are geometric forms common in the city, building
up an illusion of a new way of travelling.
Co-produced by the Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes, with technical
support of ROART, Michael Fox, the Moebius Band will be Ms. Peschkes
third sculpture utilizing inflatable technology. Previous sculptures
have been shown in Los Angeles, Berlin, and Brussels.
Valeska Peschke is a German artist based in Berlin. She has shown
throughout Germany and internationally, including Los Angeles and
Mexico City.
