The Physics of Toys
Saturday, March 16, Noon – 4pm

Learn the inside story behind toys — by taking apart wind-up toys and figuring out how they work. Confuse yourself with mirrors and figure out something about how your brain works. Based on ideas from the Exploratorium's best-selling publication, The Science Explorer Out and About, the Exploratorium presents simple interactive demonstrations and experiments for the public that reveal the science behind toys, as well as the science behind exhibits within the museum. This event is included in the price of admission to the Exploratorium.

The Physics of Toys is an interactive laboratory inside the Exploratorium, staffed by volunteers with interests and skills in science and teaching. The emphasis is not on a specific toy or product, but on the idea that "ingredients" for science experiments are readily available, and that the discovery of the scientific principles in things – even birthday presents and science exhibits – is fun. Demonstrations in the past have included kaleidoscopes, electromagnets, ink chromatography and "Slime" chemistry and will delight children, particularly those ages 10 and up. Join The Physics of Toys and see what you can make and take-home!
