Physics of Toys
Saturday, April 20, noon 4pm
On Saturday, April 20, from noon to 4pm, the Physics of Toys will
be an interactive laboratory inside the Exploratorium, staffed by
volunteers with interests and skills in science and teaching. Learn
the inside story behind toysby taking apart wind-up toys and
figuring out how they work. Confuse yourself with mirrorsand
figure out something about how your brain works. Based on ideas from
the Exploratorium's best-selling publication, The Science Explorer
Out and About, the Exploratorium presents simple interactive demonstrations
and experiments for the public that reveal the science behind toys,
as well as the science behind exhibits within the museum.
The emphasis is not on a specific toy or product, but on the idea
that "ingredients" for science experiments are readily available,
and that the discovery of the scientific principles in thingseven
holiday presents and science exhibits -- is fun. Demonstrations include
kaleidoscopes, electromagnets, ink chromatography and "Slime"
chemistry and will delight children, particularly those ages 10 and
up. Join the Physics of Toys and see what you can make and
take-home!
