Exploratorium Film Program: Catching Out

Saturday, June 28th, McBean Theater, 2pm

On Saturday, June 28 at 2pm, the Exploratorium Film Program presents Catching Out (2003, 79min) by Sarah George.

Catching Out is a documentary describing the life of freight train hopping that offers as much education as it does captivating landscapes of the United States viewed from the rails. George, along with her camera, dives right into the action, danger and beauty surrounding this alternative mode of transportation. Compiled from over five years of footage, the film catches up with a handful of self-described hobos who find the thrill and space allowed from hopping trains to be the height of living. Freedom, scenery and a unique perspective on American culture are all lures for the potential tramp. Watching the stories of these folk who rebel against normative society, the film explores the question of what it means to live as an outsider, why we need to come back inside sometimes and how transgression defines our culture. Join in a DVD Release Celebration. This event is produced in conjunction with Microcinema International, and is free with admission to the Exploratorium.
