Most people think of space and time as two separate things. Einstein realized that space and time are two parts of the same thing: spacetime. 

Einstein’s theory is based on two basic assumptions:

The speed of light is the same for all observers.

The laws of physics are the same as long as you’re traveling at a constant speed.
