SATURDAY JULY 3

Chain Reaction 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Also on Sat 7/17
A chain reaction is an interrelated series of contraptions that trigger one another to create a sequence of movement. In this daylong workshop, visitors will use ingenuity, drama, and the Exploratorium machine shop to create a collective chain reaction. Work with exhibit developers on your unique contribution to the process, and take home and tinker with your creation!

Participants must be 18 or over. Prior registration required. Call (415)561-0308 for reservations. No experience necessary—just an urge to tinker! Materials and tools will be provided.
Tinkering with Speed 2 p.m.
Munich-Berlin Walking Trip (1927, 4 min.), by Oskar Fischinger, was filmed during the summer when Fischinger walked from Munich to Berlin carrying his camera and backpack and captured images of some of the people and landscapes he encountered along the way.

Vespucciland: The Great and Free (1982, 3 min.), by Rock Ross, captures a celebratory gathering of the clan of Vespucciland.

Explore the Endless Secrets of Nature (2002, 2 min.), by Devon Damonte, presents a lightning-fast perceptual guessing game.
Bravo Papa 2040 (1989, 6 min.), by Susanne Fränzel, is the closest thing to a roller-coaster ride on film. Through a bravura display of film technique, the viewer is placed in the cockpit of a jet as it roars at terrifying speeds through a village.
SATURDAY JULY 3

Windmill and Whirligig Garden
12 noon-4 p.m.
Also on Sun 7/11
Reconnect with marbles in a whole new way! Design and build kinetic contraptions inspired by Rube Goldberg, a Pulitzer Prize-winning inventor and cartoonist best known for designing intricate chain reactions that accomplish very simple tasks. Send marbles along an interconnected obstacle course of jumps, bumps, and turns. Participants will construct and test their designs, then leave them behind for others to test, take apart, and rebuild. Use all types of materials, including funnels, tubes, planks, propellers, and pins.

Food Fun 2 p.m.

French Fries (2003, 3 min.), by Ellen Lake, captures a close-up look at Rebecca Baron's french fry collection—sealed in ziploc bags and now in various states of decay.
Ian's Collections (2000, 6 min.), by Ellen Lake, is a whimsical look at Ian Golder and his many unusual, one-of-a-kind collections: sand, macaroni, cheese boxes, straws, and m & m ® icons.
Flying Morning Glories (1985, 4 min.), by Skip Blumberg, ignites the screen with the wildly unexpected flaming "cuisine art" performance of a virtuoso sidewalk chef in Phitsanulok, Thailand.
Chinese Noodle Making: Backwards and Forwards (1989, 4 min.), by Skip Blumberg, captures Chinese chef David Yang demonstrating the ancient art of noodlemaking.
Kinetic Sandwich (2002, 4 min.), by Eric Dyer, converts mass into time while exploring the secret beauty of an everyday object. Dyer makes visual poetry out of the same-old, same-old white bread, lettuce, tomato, and lunch meat sandwich.

Note: All films will screen in the Exploratorium's McBean Theater unless otherwise noted.
