This After Dark event presented a collection of objects, organizations, and activities use various alternative energy sources, and also looked at sustainably raised food. In this short interview with Dan Goods, designer, artist, and visual strategist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Goods discusses his art piece, "Jupiter Fog Pool." The piece, inspired by the Juno mission to Jupiter, was part of "Cosmological Constructs," our After Dark event of September 2010. This After Dark event explored the diverse nomadic communities that thrive in the Bay Area including a mobile diner, food carts, an annual arts event in the desert, urban foragers, and Bay creatures that arrived by ballast water.
This April Fools’ Day After Dark event exposed people’s threshold for taking chances. For example, visitors could test their belief in the laws of physics as a bowling ball swung toward them. They could also tackle a climbing wall, try their luck at casino games, and see if they had the nerve to carry out the instructions on a card they were given. Watch the process of a deceased monitor lizard providing energy for other organisms to live in this time-lapse video. Look for this exhibit in the museum, upstairs in the Traits of Life area. A highlight of this After Dark evening was Thee Oh Sees, one of the Bay Area’s best underground bands, who created a playful aural disorientation while playing in front of “visual music” by the late experimental filmmaker and musicologist Harry Smith.
Science of Cocktails presented the artistry of master mixologists shaken with the science behind the craft. Taking an in-depth, interactive look at the physics, chemistry, and biology of cocktails, this first-time Exploratorium fundraiser engaged guests in an exploration of their favorite libations like they've never experienced before. This After Dark event featured a special installation of the Cubatron by Bay Area artist and engineer Mark Lottor. A visually stunning favorite of music and art festival audiences, the Cubatron is a 3–D light sculpture made from 8–x–8-foot modular cubes, each containing 1,000 individually programmable RGB LEDs. Viewed from any direction—even underneath—the Cubatron’s thousands of programmed pixels paint exquisite arrays of color that cascade in spectacularly dynamic patterns. As a special event in conjunction with the 2009 American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting, we connected a live audience at the Exploratorium with scientists at the South Pole.
