Sea life can sometimes serve as a marker to help navigators stay on track. Shorty Bertelmann describes how one such living marker, a pod of dolphins, helped him see what navigation is really about. What motivates modern navigators? That depends on who you ask. But many explain their passion for voyaging in terms of kuleana--responsibility. The intertwining of astronomy, Hawaiian ancestry, and traditional navigation are the subject of this video featuring astrophysicist Paul Coleman, cultural historian Koa Rice, and captain Billy Richards. The Exploratorium Eclipse team drives back to Urumqi with our partners from XJTV, after the live broadcast. It was pretty hot, probably above 40 °C most of the way, and a 14 hour drive. This is a time-compressed video of of the trip out to the Weizi Gorge (Yiwu) along China’s cloud-covered Silk Road. While in the field, the Exploratorium Eclipse remote team had a love/hate relationship with the clouds. The cloudscape of the Weizi Gorge was so spectacular it was easy to overlook that our fluffy friends could have potentially blocked our main reason for lugging 1700 lbs. of gear out to the edge of the Gobi Desert-the total solar eclipse! This is a short time-lapse video of the sky at our camp one day before the eclipse. On March 1st, we connected live with scientists aboard the scientific drilling vessel the JOIDES Resolution off the coast of Antarctica. Meet geologists Rob Dunbar, Carlota Escutia, and Christina Riesselman and learn about their historic expedition to Antarctica that is helping reveal the history of Earth's climate and teaching us about our climate future. This short video summarizes all of the steps in collecting an ice core using the Deep Ice Sheet Coring (DISC) drill. Thomas Bauska, of Oregon State University helped Heidi Roop put together this video. Exploratorium graphic artist David Barker describes the physics of baseball bats, and makes some sweet music in the process! Staff educator Modesto Tamez tells how he gets students exploring electromagnets, a great preparation for making an electric motor. TI staff educator Eric Muller explains how to make your own record player!
