Homegrown, handmade and hands-on, there’s no place in the world like the Exploratorium. Now that we’re open at Pier 15, there’s more to explore than ever before. Edited b-roll of establishing shots, exhibits, and visitors for press use of the new Exploratorium at Pier 15. Extended raw b-roll of establishing shots, exhibits, and visitors for press use of the new Exploratorium at Pier 15. Riotously colorful bacteria and mobile mosses meet carnivorous plants and rotting carcasses in this impressionistic journey through the Life Sciences area at the Exploratorium. Research Scientist Bethany Ehlmann and Mechanical Designer Scott McGinley explain some of the scientific instruments aboard the Mars rover Curiosity. Virtual worlds have physics. In this exhibit a visitor knocks over a small domino which knocks over a larger domino and so on down an exponentially growing line of dominoes which all the while obey the laws of physics. Virtual Worlds are social spaces, music and dancing are ubiquitous, and so we made an exhibit that mixes a unique color for every avatar into a blend of colors when they dance together. Dancers can observe the blending of colors and think about the blending of genes that happens when they make children. See the subtle, mesmeric effects revealed by slow-motion observation of three iconic exhibits: Circling Wave Umbrella, in which spinning fabric forms pockets of swirling air; Rift Zone, a miniature geothermal landscape created by air bubbling through fine sand; and Vortex, a swirling vortex of water in a hydrodynamic dance with gravity. Scott Weaver has spent the last 35 years painstakingly constructing a replica of the city of San Francisco made of toothpicks! Not only that, but it is also a marble run, allowing ping-pong balls to take various tours through the city. His artwork will be on display in the Tinkering Studio at the Exploratorium until June 19th. Made by the Exploratorium's Teacher Institute, this "machinima"--a film made entirely in a virtual world, highlights the exhibits and recent events in Second Life on the Exploratorium Island and 'Sploland sims.
