May is for members, and we’re celebrating spring, Carnaval, and you! Join us on Sunday, May 4, from 6–9 p.m. for our Carnaval-themed Members Appreciation Party—come decked out in your most vibrant spring costume and enjoy an evening packed with fun for everyone. Go on a museum-wide plankton treasure hunt, groove to music and live entertainment, and enjoy complimentary refreshments.
Chairman’s Circle, Catalyst Circle, and Innovator donors are invited to attend a special reception in the Kanbar Forum from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Learn more about this event and other special benefits available to donors.
Dance troupe Cuicacalli builds communities through dance while expanding, exploring and celebrating the cultural traditions of the Americas. Experience the vibrant cultural rhythms of this carnaval–style youth drum and dance corps as they perform outdoors. Experience the spirit and culture of Brazil with Energia do Samba, a Bahia-style samba dance group, as they hit the floor with their brand of playful, joyful samba moves and colorful costumes.
Construct your own instruments out of everyday materials with our awesome Explorables volunteers! Create shakers (a festive addition to any Carnaval), Glove-a-phones (which sound a little like a saxophone), and cuicas (an integral part of samba music).
Spark your creativity in the Tinkering Studio! Explore light, shadow, and motion as you create whimsical shadow boxes using toys, motors, and other small objects.
Did you know that you can draw and paint with light? This hands-on activity lets you create striking images using a camera, a light source, and your own imagination.
