What are the challenges to fighting fires in San Francisco? Do you feel prepared in the event of a fire in your home? Join firefighters from the San Francisco Fire Department to explore fire safety, education, and prevention in time for National Fire Prevention Week (October 5–11, 2014).

Investigate firefighting tactics and strategy and discover the dangers of toxins in fire. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher, practice fire safety skills in simulated conditions, and see what it takes to become a member of the San Francisco Fire Department. Watch FEMA search and rescue dogs demonstrate their ladder-climbing and tracking skills, and explore a working fire boat and fire engine—as well as an antique engine. Hear the unique history of San Francisco’s Fire Department and find out why the city still manufactures its own wooden ladders. You can also bring an unwrapped toy to donate to the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program.
