Chaperone Tips
(download a Word document of this chaperone sheet)

Exploring the Museum
You can help students to deepen their own experiences at the exhibits. You don’t have to be a science expert, just a good explorer!

  • The Exploratorium is a big place, so don’t worry about trying to see the entire museum. Students may retain more if they have time to explore fewer exhibits in more depth. And it’s okay to take breaks from concentration and enjoy the museum.
  • Ask students open-ended questions to help them explore. Remember that you don’t have to have the answers:
--What do you see (hear, feel, smell, etc.)?
    --What happens when . . .?
    --Does anything surprise you?
--What do you like at this exhibit?
  • Let students try an exhibit before they read the exhibit label. Playing is a good way to learn.

Worksheets and Pathways
Written assignments chosen by your teacher can be a tool to help students have a more focused and fulfilling experience at the exhibits.

  • Encourage students to explore an exhibit before responding to worksheet questions. This will give them a broader perspective on the exhibit.
  • The best student responses on worksheets come from the students’ own experiences and ideas.

The Three Rules
You are responsible for the behavior of your students. Please make sure that you always know where your students are and let them know that you are available to them.

  • Do not run in the museum.
  • Do not eat or drink near the exhibits. Visitors may purchase lunch from the café or enjoy eating outside near the lagoon.
  • Chaperones must accompany students into the Museum Store.

Thank you for being a great chaperone!

Logistics

  • Everyone should be wearing a sticker with the name of your school so that we can identify you in the museum.
  • Restrooms and drinking fountains are located on the ground floor in the entry area and inside the museum on the west side.
  • Lockers are located on the east side of the museum, just past the entry area.
  • If a student is lost or injured, notify an Explainer wearing an orange vest. The desk in the main office is our central information check-in location. The lost and found is also located here.
