Strandbeest: The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen:   A Conversation with Lena Herzog (Clip)
Running Time:
01:13:00
There is nothing conceited about strandbeests, even though they are sophisticated and multilayered. And that combination of sophistication and simplicity extends even to their construction, because if you look at them they seem complex but actually they are built up from repetitions of just a handful of core principles. Lena Herzog, in conversation with Lawrence Weschler

After Dark:  After Dark: Illusions: Alexa Meade (Clip)
Running Time:
00:02:00
Watch celebrated artist Alexa Meade transform a live model into a seemingly two-dimensional tableau. Reversing the tradition of trompe loeil, the Renaissance painting technique in which objects appear real, Alexa Meade painstakingly applies acrylic paint onto actual people and objects, creating illusions of seamless, two-dimensional portraits. Unified by bold brushwork reminiscent of mid-20th-century painting styles, her subjects appear flattened, as if painted on canvas, even when viewed from different angles. Meades work invites a deep exploration into the nature of perception, the role of photography in viewing ephemeral artworks, and the sudden intimacy of portraiture.
