Caolionn O’Connell was born and raised in Los Angeles, where, she recalls, she annoyed her math teacher by asking, “When am I ever going to use calculus in real life?” She is currently a graduate student in physics at Stanford University, working at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). Her research focus is on finding new techniques to accelerate particles faster and over shorter distances. In her spare time, she accelerates herself—hiking and running—in the hills of Northern California.
Stephon Alexander is a native of Trinidad, but moved with his family to the Bronx in New York City when he was eight years old. An early fascination with computers and computer games launched his interest in physics. He earned his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Brown University, specializing in superstrings and cosmology. Today, he's employed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), working to explain the early evolution of the universe. He also plays tenor sax in a San Francisco jazz band, Izum.
