Meredith Monk has been on the vanguard of interdisciplinary performance for 45 years. She can be described as a dancer, choreographer, vocalist, composer, and filmmaker, but, as she says in the beginning of this conversation from November 1984, she’d prefer not be “called” anything at all. She discusses her film and multimedia works of that era, particularly “The Games,” a modern musical theater piece about relearning culture after a nuclear holocaust. She reflects on her process
and aspirations for her artwork—that it is not something to figure out, but something to be experienced differently by different individuals. She also takes audience questions and performs pieces from her opera, <i>Education of the Girlchild</i>.
